Top spot - John`s Place

Guide to best local breakfast spots

Are you staying in Victoria BC and looking for the best spot to grab some breakfast? Or perhaps you've lived here your whole life and wondered where to eat out on a Saturday morning. Below you'll find an insider local look at the top five places to get breakfast in Victoria.

1. John's Place - 723 Pandora Avenue

You will probably find out by the frequent lines at John's place that this is a local hot-spot for breakfast on the weekends and for lunches during the week. It's accessible to tourists by walking from anywhere downtown and offers some of the best Eggs Benedict in town. They offer simple breakfasts with traditional eggs, bacon and toast or more modern breakfasts for those vegetarians or vegans. John's place has a jukebox playing and is very lively,so if you don't really like a noisy restaurant, this isn't your place. But if you are looking for an affordable breakfast, that is usually quite good, with fast service, then you should hop on down. Don't be fooled if there is a line. The trick is to right inside and put your name on the list. For two people, it shouldn't take more than 5-10 minutes tops to get a table. The staff are used to big crowds and have mastered the quick turn-around for breakfast. The staff are very outgoing and playful with tourists.

2. The Blue Fox - 919 Fort Street

Again, a very hot local spot for breakfast. It's been featured in many newspapers and magazines and is Zagat rated. The Blue Fox is very cozy with a limited seating capacity so expect a lineup on the weekend and some weekdays. The decor is very modern and warm with local art on the walls for sale. The food is delicious and modern. But there is still a traditional breakfast offered for a reasonable price ($7-$12). If you see a lineup at Blue Fox, don't despair it shouldn't take too long, but they aren't as good at managing crowds as John's place. You have to stand in line until it's your turn - they won't put your name on a list. This creates confusion at times, with who is next in line. But in the end, the Blue Fox lives up to its reputation and most breakfasts go off without a hitch. If you like a quiet casual atmosphere this will do brilliantly for you.

3. Rosie`s Diner - 253 Cook Street (Short walk from downtown core)

This place is definitely worth the short walk for their quiet and unassuming breakfast spot. Rosie`s Diner is medium sized and acts like an old 50`s diner. The menu is simple, but is very delicious and relatively cheap. The staff are very warm and friendly and present no attitude towards you. They are quick too. Food comes out hot and fresh and leaves your belly feeling really good. It`s close to Beacon Hill Park as well, so you can walk off your breakfast afterwards. Rosie`s is definitely the way to go for a group breakfast or a couple just wanting to get on with their day.

4. Molé - 554 Pandora Avenue

Molé is a relatively new hot spot in Victoria. This place is where local hipster`s grab a coffee at next door Habit and take their time to get a fresh, modern and rather exquisite breakfast. The menu is very polished and is a little on the higher end. If there is a lineup, put your name on the list and go next door to Habit (they are owned by the same people) and get a coffee and sip, sit, relax while you wait. The food is very good with modern twists on many traditional favourites. Many vegetarians in town call it their favourite restaurant for breakfast because of the many fresh choices. If you want a great food experience and like to stimulate your pallet, this would be a great choice for you.

5. Willy`s Bakery - 537 Government Street

Willy`s is the perfect spot for a quick breakfast to start your day. Excellent coffee, baked goods like muffins, danishes, scones along with many hot items. Sit out on their garden patio and soak up the summer sun and downtown environment. Staff are very friendly, courteous and helpful. Great spot to start your day - local or tourist.

I hope this gives you some options for trying out a new breakfast place in Victoria BC. If you have time, definitely give them all a try, they are all worth it. Have a differing opinion or another place to suggest, then let us know about it! I`m always happy to learn more great spots as the city grows.

Happy Breakfast!

You forgot Floyds, and Cabin 12 is also pretty awsome, although when I was there last year it appeared that Cabin 12 might be about ready to close, the location was killing them.
