He's cute. But he barks - a lot.

Ultrasonic Bark Control - The Humane Way to Stop Barking.

The use of ultrasonic bark control devises on dogs is a subject of much debate lately. Several products have emerged on the market using a very high pitch sound, not audible to humans, that sends a message to dogs when they bark. Some argue that this is painful to dogs. However, many experts say it's the most humane way to treat a routinely barking dog and to effectively train them to stop in many situations.

Ultrasonic bark control involves using a sensor that can detect a bark and in turn sends out a very quick high pitched noise that irritates the dog so much that they stop barking. The sensor can generally work inside or outside and even work on a neighbour’s dog, depending on the range of the device.

The key according to dog trainers is the essential timing of these devices. Harry Coupler, dog trainer from Costa Mesa, California explains. "When we want a dog to stop barking, essentially we're trying to train them to cease a natural behaviour. It's not easy. As with many dog behaviours we want to stop, the timing of letting a dog know barking is not acceptable is crucial. Ultrasonic waves are immediate, so the dog understands exactly what it did wrong. In this way, the behaviour will stop sooner and eventually you won't need the device", Harry explains. He adds, "it's also in no way painful to the dog, unlike many electric fences or muzzles."

One of most recommended ultrasonic bark control devices on the market is the "bark-off" product which is now on tv infomercials. Bark off is a small device that you can put inside or outside that has been proven to quickly cease barking behaviour. Because of it's relatively low cost, 2 payments of $19.95, so about $40 it's well worth it for most dog owners. Bark Off has quickly gained a huge share of the ultrasonic control market - mostly because they are just so darn effective.
